The play The Color Purple has been running at the Broadway by many theatre companies. Here's what a reporter says:

If you didn't know the play is an adaptation of the Alice Walker novel and the 1985 film by Steven Spielberg. It is a multigenerational story of violence, trust and hope. The musical on the Broadway had music by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell and Allee Willis. Plus some soul, blues and gospel emotions. The Color Purple is an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.
The Connecticut Theatre Company's production is a musical adaptation about Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story.With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.
