India Foundation for the Arts presents MaathuKathe Conversations [Bengaluru]

Greetings from India Foundation for the Arts (IFA)!

Join us for our upcoming MaathuKathe/Conversations on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 07:00 PM with Kanaka Murthy who will talk about her experiences and insights as a woman sculptor in India, in a male-dominated domain. Her sculptures, carved in stone and bronze, depict poets, musicians, and Hindu gods and goddesses. She will discuss her creative journey and relationship with sculpture, as one of the country's few traditional woman sculptors to have her images worshipped in temples; the styles and artistic form and medium of sculpture; the iconography and symbolism of her works in stone; and her inspirations.

ABOUT KANAKA MURTHY Kanaka Murthy hails from a conservative Brahmin family in T Narsipur town in Karnataka. Her mentor was the late Devalakunda Vadiraj, a traditional sculptor. Her publication titled "Shilpa Rekhe" features line drawings. Her works include the poet, playwright, novelist, and critic Kuvempu's (1904-1994) bust at Lalbagh West Gate, the Wright Brothers' statue at the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore; busts of Hindustani classical vocalists such as Gangubai Hangal, Mallikarjun Mansur, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in other public spaces. She has been presented with the Karnataka Jakanachari Award; State Shilpakala Academy Award, the Rajyotsava Award and Suvarna Karnataka Award. Her memoir titled Howde? Idu Naane was published in 2014.
