RAD TIMES Review: Actor Suchitra Krishnamoorthi empowers a woman's unspoken heart in DRAMA QUEEN!

A well-crafted and executed hilarious comedy solo play with brave and heart touching strokes of self expression and beautiful visuals and imagery. The playwright, actor and singer of the play is Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. The concept and the creative direction is by Etiene Couttinho, a light design by Chetan Chand, and directed by Randhir Roy.

The play starts with Suchitra having a conversation with a guest as the play goes. Her world opens up. You can visualize her house help, her two dogs, her daughter, her ex-husband, Ram Gopal Verma, Karan Johar, Ken, her Shrink, and, most hilarious of all, her AMMA, her mother. The play revolves around her struggle to find someone suitable to marry; she approaches potential suitors, finding disappointment either in the situation or the person or in her own expectations. The play involves a lot of external dialogues along with funny and reflective internal dialogues that the artist has with herself.

The duration of the play is 65 minutes. 65 minutes of light-hearted laughter filled with stellar music and songs keeps you to your seat. It is not what you say, but how you say it is what matters. In this play, Suchitra has said really brave and vulnerable things wrapped in a lighthearted sense of humor that will tickle your funny bone and keep you laughing throughout. The whole play is a piece of art, made with the sense to express oneself, showing the happy parts but not hiding the curves and edges. There is to learn and to laugh and to get inspired to see oneself and one is. A translation of her discovery into a theatre performance is rare and rewarding.

The stage is divided into three sections, physically demonstrating a rocking chair in the middle, a long lounge sofa with a side table at the left a setup with two open cushioned armchairs that might seem like a casual meeting place with a wine cellar seen, and paintings appearing on upstage. The play uses a projector that projects eye-catchy, metaphorical, comical digital art and sketches that take the narrative forward. Different characters come to life with their dialogues being played, which are pre-recorded. Metaphorically, they matched the social class of the protagonist and also sometimes acted as spaces in her mind, oscillating between real space and space perceived, which is shown craftily by light design and blockings.

This play is hilarious, and I would recommend you to watch this play enthusiastically. This play entertained me, made me laugh, and also inspired me. To express one's mental health, sexual cravings, feeling of loneliness, losing of identity, and wanting an anchor trying to provide a complete and human expression is influential and galvanizing. Watch this play with an open mind and sensitive heart. You will meet someone absolutely beautiful and human. There will be places where you may feel this is cliche, this is common for all, why all the fuss? In the most common things when you find comedy and beauty, it is the common things that you connect to and the differences that keep you interested in the life of the Drama Queen, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. The play is cathartic, the play is soft-spoken, the play is blunt and honest. DRAMA QUEEN REFRESHED is all things, that an honest work of art should tickle!
