Panchayat, the latest show by TVF, available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video is something that offers us a glance of village life and politics whose simplicity brings a smile on our faces in these tough times. Abhishek (Jitendra Kumar), an engineering graduate, finds himself in a small village called Phulera, Uttar Pradesh as the secretary of the village Panchayat.
Unhappy and unsatisfied with what he has achieved in life and with dreams of getting a better corporate job like his friend Prateek (Biswapati Sarkar), Abhishek, as suggested by Prateek, starts preparing for the Common Admission Test to get into one of the IIMs and land up a high-paying job. How he manages to study and what he does while in Phulera is shown over 8 thirty-minute episodes. Each episode deals with an event revolving around a single thing/incident which becomes the vehicle for us to enter Abhishek’s life in the village and the people he works with. Brij Bhushan Dubey (Raghuvir Yadav) is the Pradhan-Pati, a position created by himself, who looks at the workings of the Panchayat originally to be taken care by his wife Manju Devi (Neena Gupta), the actual Pradhan of the village. Prahlad Pandey (Faisal Malik), Deputy Pradhan, and Vikas (Chandan Roy), the Gram Sahayak are the people Abhishek is troubled with and also the ones with whom he spends most of his time.

Coping with studies on the one hand and his loneliness on the other, Abhishek finds it difficult to adapt to his new life but eventually accepts the reality and also manages to find friends in his office colleagues. The show might betray its purpose as a comedy at times but manages to keep you smiling successfully throughout by its simple yet beautiful depiction of village life.

The strength of the show is the beautiful portrayal of lively characters by talented actors like Raghuvir Yadav, Neena Gupta, and Jitendra Kumar. However, I personally found Faisal Malik and Chandan Roy’s portrayal of Prahlad Pandey and Vikas more loving and something that you’d remember for their innocence and sweetness. Theatre actor Sandeep Shikhar who comes on the screen only for three scenes towards the end of the show also manages to capture your attention by his honest portrayal of villager struggling with his wife over their new-born son’s name. Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy, and Sandeep Shikhar are, undoubtedly, actors the audience would love to watch more. Deepak Kumar Mishra, the director of the show who also appears as an electrician in one of the episodes, has managed to depict the village as the urban viewer imagines and would love to see with the help of beautiful cinematography by Amitabha Singh.
